Students from Natchez observing how air monitoring works
Tribal Air Monitoring Program

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (PLPT) is funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor air quality on the Reservation. The Tribal Air Program at Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation (PLIR) is collecting ambient air quality data on an hourly basis. In support of the air data collected, meteorological data is collected every five minutes.

The data collected will be used for the following:

  • To determine ambient levels of PM10 (particles less than 10 microns in size)

  • To observe pollution trends locally and throughout the region.

  • To develop or modify control strategies that prevent or alleviate air pollution
        episodes.

  • To provide real-time data to the public via the Tribal Website.

  • To submit air quality data to the EPA Air Quality System and other data
collection agencies such as AIRNow and the National Weather service.
  • There are two monitoring sites on the Reservation. The first is in Wadsworth just north of the Natchez Elementary School Playground. The second station is in the northwestern quadrant of the Reservation just north of Pyramid Lake.

    Tribal Environmental Exchange Network

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is a participant in a pilot study that seeks to demonstrate the advantages of a web-based, automated system for collecting, validating, and reporting data.

The pilot study is funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. The initial project included participation from five Tribes but has since expanded to several other Tribes. The network developed as a result of the pilot study is called the Tribal Exchange Network (TREX).
